SWRBC Winner….

Many congrats go out to Jason Calhoon from Tucson. He is our first ever South West Barista Champ. He’ll now be heading off to MN for the National Championship in May. I’m in the process of making plans to go and while I’m there cheering this guy on.

It’s cool that the Comp happened. It was a source of a small debate in the arizonacoffee.com forum. Getting the word out for any event can be a difficult task and that seemed to be the case here as well. The nice thing about something like this is that you can do things differently next time around. I would like to see local (in region) communication liaisons for the SCAA, who get the info from Michelle (SCAA), and spread it out to the coffee houses, roasters, etc. Thus increasing the effectiveness of the turn out and participation.

No matter what though, as a region, we have to do our part in growing our local coffee scene. There are some cools talks going on now (behind the scenes) for a small event. Nothing big, but building community can almost be as important as other lessons you learn in coffee. Hopefully I’ll have more info to post soon.

Also, I got the green light today to start putting together a Barista Training Class for the public. It’ll be a (small) group effort between a few folks. It’ll focus on espresso extraction, steaming techniques, bar basics, and even some latte art. I’m REALLY EXCITED about this. I don’t have a time frame yet, but the planning will begin later in March. Anyway, once again many many congrats go out to Jason Calhoon for his win in Vegas.
